LIFE on mARTs: Science through Art
The Training and Lifelong Learning Center (KEDIVIM) of the University of Crete and the Museum of Natural History of Crete-University of Crete in collaboration with CasermArcheologica are organizing a 4-day program of educational, face to face activities (workshops) at the exhibition site of the Natural History Museum of Crete-University of Crete, in English. The program is LIFE on mARTs: Science through Art, which aims to create new models of learning science through art.

The workshops are organized within the framework of the European program “ERASMUS+ “LIFE ON mARTS”, with the support of K.EDI.VI.M -PK. During the workshops, participants will have the opportunity to learn and experiment, at a beginner level, with artistic techniques, such as cyanotype and monotype, with the art of embroidery and how it can be connected to science, but also with natural dyes and plant printing on fabrics.
The workshops are FREE AND OPEN TO EVERYONE. They are mainly addressed to teachers of all levels of Education, museum educators, artists, and those interested in the subject.
Registration is mandatory as places are limited.

The participants will be given a certificate of attendance from K.EDI.VI.M -PK as well as a Europass supplement certificate.
In addition to the workshops, there will be an exhibition of natural paintings, “naturografias”, by the artist Roberto Ghezzi. These paintings were created in six locations with fresh water and one in soil, across various habitats in the prefecture of Heraklion, Crete. The exhibition will take place in the museum premises.

14:00 – 15:30 Eleutheria Antaloudaki: Basic morphological plant characters, toxic and poisonous plants, natural dye plant (presentation)
15:30 – 17:00 Elina Choudetsanaki: Introduction to natural dyes. In this workshop, we will learn how το extract natural pigments from
flowers and plants and create our unique garments. Beginner level.

14:00-15:30 Roberto Ghezzi talks about his research and artwork: The “naturografia”, research between art and science where the artist and nature connect deeply.
15:30-17:00 Roberto Ghezzi’s workshop Cyanotype Α: Cyanotype for herbs: from the classic use of the cyanotype, which involves the use of herbs and leaves,
and sunlight Participants will be accompanied to the NHMC garden and around the museum, where they can collect the materials and create their own cyanotypes.

17:15 – 18:45 Roberto Ghezzi’s workshop Cyanotype Β: Cyanotype for ice, which involves the use of melting ice to create the works.

14:00-16:00 Roberto Ghezzi’s workshop: Printing without a press (Gel printing): Participants will be able to create monotypes with a printing technique that does not involve
the use of the press. Participants will be accompanied to the NHMC garden and around the museum, where they will be able to collect plants and other materials for their monotypes.

16:15-19:15 Elina Choudetsanaki’s workshop: Introduction to botanical print on fabric. In this workshop, we will introduce you to an eco-printing technique used to transfer
the shapes and patterns of plants and flowers to fabrics. Beginner level

I. Stathi
Iasmi Stathi is a biologist with a PhD in Taxonomy, Ecology, and Phylogeography of Scorpions (Arachnids) and is responsible for the scorpion collection at the Natural History Museum of Crete at the University of Crete (NHMC-UoC). Since 2016, she has been a member of the teaching staff at the School of Science and Technology of the University of Crete. She is a member of the National Centre for the Certification of Continuing Education Structures (EKEPIS) as an adult educator. She has twenty-three years of experience in Environmental Education, Student Education, Lifelong Learning, and Educational Research and Development at the Department of Education of MFIK-PK, the Technical University of Crete, and the Hellenic Mediterranean University (formerly TEI of Crete). She has participated in more than 20 Research Education programs funded by either national or European resources.
